.com.au domain names and .net.au domain names are the most popular domains
amongst commercial entities in Australia.
Individuals may obtain .com.au domain names and .net.au domain names by simply
applying for an ABN, and under the sub heading choose entity type of 'sole trader'.
You must be able to supply an ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN to secure your domain (register/check your ABN here , register/check your ACN here ). Your domain will be registered based on the criteria that most closely matches your domain.
- An exact match of the business name or trademark
- An abbreviation of the business name or trademark
- An acronym of the business name or trademark
- Product that the business manufactures or sells
- A program that the business administers
- An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
- A service that your business provides
- A venue that the business operates
- A profession that is practiced by the business' employees or members
- An event that your business organises or sponsors
Domain names can be 2 to 63 letters, and words can be separated by hyphens, but not spaces.
.ASN.AU Domain Names
The .asn.au domains are normally reserved for incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs. An example is the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry who have registered the domain www.acci.asn.au .
Any non-commercial registered Australian entity is eligible, and must meet one of the following criteria:
- A program that the business administers
- An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
- A service that your business provides
- A profession that your business administers

.ORG.AU Domain Names
The .org.au domains are reserved for charities and non-profit organisations,
eg. clubs, churches, community, welfare, and charity type groups.
Your ABN/ACN/ABRN or ARSN record must specify that you are a registered charity or non-profit organisation.
Your domain will be registered based on the criteria that closely matches your domain.
.ID.AU Domain Names
The id.au domains are especially designed for individuals who are Australian citizens or residents. NO ABN/ACN/ABRN/ARSN is required. Applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Derived from or includes the individuals' name. For example if the person registering the domain is John Smith, the acceptable examples below or similar are acceptable for approval:
- john.id.au
- jsmith.id.au
- johns.id.au
- smithj.id.au
- js.id.au
- smith.id.au
The above examples should give you an idea of what 'derived' from your name means.
Nicknames or obscure id.au orders are not valid.
